FAQs on

Timber Stainting in Sydney

1. Why is staining or oiling my timber deck necessary in Sydney?

Sydney’s extreme climate, featuring intense sun and high rainfall, rapidly degrades untreated or poorly maintained timber. Staining or oiling is crucial because it creates a protective barrier against UV damage (preventing greying) and repels water (preventing warping, cracking, and rot), significantly extending the life and beauty of your timber investment.

2. How often should my timber deck or pergola be re-stained?

For exterior timber exposed to direct Sydney sun and rain, re-staining or re-oiling is typically required every 12 to 18 months. High-traffic areas (like the main deck walking paths) may need a light refresh sooner. We recommend a simple annual inspection to determine when the timber needs attention.

3. What is the difference between staining and oiling?

Oils (often solvent-based) penetrate deeply to nourish the wood from within and highlight the natural grain, but may require more frequent re-application. Stains (often acrylic or pigment-based) form a surface film that offers higher UV resistance and longer-lasting colour, making them ideal for very sunny spots. We advise on the best product based on your timber type and exposure.

4. What kind of preparation is involved before staining?

Preparation is the most critical step. Our process involves: thorough cleaning with specialised timber cleaners to remove dirt, mildew, and old, dead wood fibres; light sanding to smooth the surface and open the timber grain; and finally, allowing the timber to fully dry to ensure maximum penetration of the stain or oil.

5. Can you restore old, grey, and weathered timber?

Yes. Heavily weathered, grey timber can often be significantly restored. We use specialised timber brighteners and powerful cleaning agents followed by sanding to remove the dead outer layer and expose the fresh wood underneath. This preparation allows the new stain or oil to penetrate correctly and bring the timber back to life.

6. How long will the timber staining process take?

The duration depends on the size of the area (e.g., deck size) and the weather, as the timber must be completely dry for preparation and curing. A standard deck may take 2 to 4 days including preparation, waiting for the wood to dry, and applying two coats of stain/oil with necessary curing time between coats.

7. What happens if it rains after you have applied the stain?

Rain is the biggest challenge for staining projects. We will not apply any coats if there is rain forecast. If unexpected rain occurs after the stain has been applied but before it has fully cured, we may need to lightly sand and re-apply that section to ensure a perfect, durable finish.

8. What types of timber can you restore (e.g., Merbau, Treated Pine, etc.)?

We have experience restoring all common exterior timber found in Sydney, including hard- and softwoods like Merbau, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Jarrah, and Treated Pine. Each timber type requires a specific preparation technique and often a specific oil or stain formulation for the best results.
